2009 will be a year of destiny for small business

“Destiny, when one door is shut, always leaves another open.”

2009 will be a year when the destiny of many companies will be determined.  Unfortunately, many small businesses won’t be in control of their own destiny – they will be the downstream victims of the problems created by larger corporations, banking failures and the global economic meltdown.  Sadly, they will have done everything right and played by every rule and still not succeed.

Many doors have already been shut, and more are likely to close.  December was not a pretty month for consumers and retailers, and the ripple effect of a disappointing holiday selling season will play out in the New Year.  Small businesses have been focused on the shutting doors, trying to react and respond to them as quickly as possible.  The challenge ahead of us now is to remain optimistic and to focus our resources on the doors that have been left open.  It won’t be an easy task, but it is a necessary one.

It is one thing for a small business to fail in a time of growth and prosperity.  It is another to become a statistic – one more casualty of the difficult recession that we are in.  The result is the same; however, one is a more difficult pill to swallow.

Destiny always leaves another door open.  Now is the time to find them.
