Opportunity (the need to re-invent)

“Never look for birds of this year in the nests of the last.”

Growing a business, whether through organic growth or new business prospecting, is always a challenge for small businesses – and is being made even more challenging in our turbulent and evolving economy. With bankruptcies and consolidations, last year’s nests may not even exist anymore. And if they do exist, it sure seems like the number of birds is less and less…

Smart companies wind up re-inventing themselves, and do it as often as it takes. We add services, enhance our capabilities and expand our experience base in order to stay ahead of the migratory pattern of business these days. It’s not an easy thing to do – change is never easy, but it is necessary for survival.

Opportunity is knowing where to look, and having the energy and enthusiasm to go out and seek new nests rather than relying on the old ones. As business owners, the challenge we face is in aligning and motivating the organization to continually seek new opportunities – to learn where the new nests may be, and how to find them before everyone else does!
